Article 9 of 10: Why I Chose Kala Cotton Fabric for the Next Cottedge Collection

I’ve been talking a lot about Kala cotton here and on Instagram, so I thought I’d share why I love working with this fabric. It’s one of those textiles that grows on you. The more time you spend with it, the more you appreciate it - not just how it looks, but how it feels and wears in real life.

Kala cotton is an indigenous cotton fabric from Kutch, Gujarat. It has been grown there for generations and is naturally suited to the dry climate, often requiring minimal irrigation, no pesticides, or heavy intervention. This makes it a more sustainable cotton option compared to conventional cotton.

The fabric is handwoven on a loom, so you can actually feel the human touch in it. It's often naturally dyed or made using chemical free dyes, which keeps the process gentler, both on the fabric and on the people working with it.

What I love most about Kala cotton, beyond its environmental benefits, is its subtle texture. Slightly grainy at first, but it softens beautifully with wear. It’s soft, but not delicate. There’s a sturdiness to it that makes it feel dependable, like something you’ll reach for again and again.

It’s also breathable, easy to wear, and unfussy. The kind of fabric you don’t have to think too much about, especially on busy days when you just want to throw something on and still feel put together.

Beautiful on its own or with extra weft motifs woven in, creating subtle patterns. There’s a certain ease and sophistication in its simplicity.

I’m looking forward to bringing a limited collection of two pant styles and two top styles in Kala cotton (I’ve been wearing the first samples in the picture above, but the final pieces will come in different fabrics). Easy to wear pieces that work well in the summer months and layer easily as the weather cools.

More on these soon - I can’t wait to share!!!
